The Family Resource and Advocacy Center is a program designed to support children under the age of 22 with developmental disabilities and their families. In addition to providing support, information, and referral services. The FRAC also supports a number of activities including hosting parent support and People First groups, sponsoring the activities of the Sonoma County Down Syndrome Supports and the Boost Camp, and co-hosting an annual summer camp at Howarth Park called Kamp Kennedy. Support Groups Schedule
The Sonoma County Down Syndrome Supports (SCDSS) mission is to promote advocacy, raise awareness, further educational pursuits, and support research for people with Down syndrome and their families. To that end, the group hosts a Mom’s Monthly Connection meeting for mothers with children 0-5 years of age with the purpose of providing a forum where moms can meet, share experiences, and find support. In addition to hosting the mom’s support group, the SCDSS creates hope baskets and distributes them to new parents while they are still in the hospital and sponsors recreational activities for people with developmental disabilities. The SCDSS also hosts the National Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk in September to celebrate Down syndrome awareness month and raise funds to promote advocacy and support research. For more information about the SCDSSG contact Diane Hobaugh at 537-8001 or visit the website sonomacountydownsyndromesupport.org. The Boost Camp is a four-week conductive education program in Santa Rosa designed to educate children with motor impairments, enabling them to achieve their own personal highest level of independence and control over their environment. Tasks designed to develop purposeful movement including crawling, sitting, standing, grasping, and taking steps (just to name a few) are learned and practiced until mastered. At the completion of the four-week program, children grow both cognitively and emotionally as well as become more physically stable and show increased self-esteem and confidence. For more information about Boost Camp contact Susy McBride at 542-9605 or visit the website at www.boostcamp.org. |
