Our vehicles cover three counties that include Sonoma, Napa and Solano. They travel in residential and commercial areas stopping to pick up and deliver BI program participants to work, appointments, Becoming Independent facilities, and home. We carried approximately 228 riders last year and traveled approximately 2,274 miles each workday.
Becoming Independent is the largest provider of non-ambulatory transportation in Sonoma County acting as a resource for other agencies. We work with the City of Santa Rosa Department of Parks and Recreation, West County School Systems, and the Earl Baum Center for the Blind.
We also provide transportation services through BI Express, a dial-a-ride service that operates in the evenings and on weekends to supplement public transportation. BI Express provides approximately 34 trips per month with a monthly ridership average of 84 passengers, totaling 559 miles.
Operating costs near $18,000 per year per vehicle. The Vehicle Adoption Program sprang from the desire of local businesses and individuals who wanted to support BI's transportation program. For about $250 a month, a business or individual can "advertise" on the sides and back of BI wheelchair vans, buses, and trucks. About 10% of the of the annual sponsorship goes to creating and adhering the signage. The remaining 90% helps to defray the costs of upkeep of the adopted vehicle.
